SINUSITIS Sinusitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes which line the sinus cavities. Acute sinusitis may be caused by a nasal infection, cold, flu, bacterial, or viral infections which originated in the respiratory tract. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by nasal polyps, injury, smoking, fumes, and allergies such as hay fever and (most often) food allergies. Headaches, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and loss of smell are common symptoms.
