Sinusitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes which line the sinus cavities. Acute sinusitis may be caused by a nasal infection, cold, flu, bacterial, or viral infections which originated in the respiratory tract. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by nasal polyps, injury, smoking, fumes, and allergies such as hay fever and (most often) food allergies. Headaches, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and loss of smell are common symptoms. Sinusitis may cause ear infections.

To combat chronic sinusitis, it is necessary to eliminate the causes such as smoking, etc. Mucus-forming and allergen-related foods must be eliminated from the diet. Introduce a natural diet, decreasing acid foods, and increasing alkaline foods. Exclude dairy products, wheat, corn, and refined carbohydrates. Raw foods, such as salads, vegetable and fruit juices, followed by lightly cooked vegetables, are necessary.

Essential oils are effective in relieving congestion and discomfort. Being a powerful antiseptic, they may eradicate infection.

Suggested essential oils: Cajeput, eucalyptus, niaouli, pine, tea tree, frankincense, birch, yarrow, blue tansy, chamomile (German), ginger root.
