The circulatory system is the means by which the essential nutrients from the food we eat and the oxygen from the air we breathe is transported to every cell in the body, and waste products and toxins are removed. Arteries carry the blood away from the heart, and veins return it to the heart.

Disorders of the circulatory system include hyper- and hypotension, escalated levels of cholesterol, and varicose veins. Heart diseases are also associated with this system. Nutrition, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle are essential in the maintenance of a strong circulatory system. Excessive consumption of animal protein, cigarette smoking, and alcohol abuse can lead, often with fatal results, to cardiovascular disease.

Certain aromatherapy oils have the ability to cause vasoconstriction, while others cause vasodilation. Vasoconstriction results when muscle fibers contract, causing the diameter of the blood vessel to reduce. Vasodilation results when the muscle fibers relax and the diameter of the blood vessels increases. This action allows for a greater volume of blood to flow through that area. Stimulating circulation is beneficial for conditions where there is heat, swelling, and redness. Oils well selected will have the ability to treat many conditions related to impaired circulation with pleasing results.

Suggested essential oils: Black pepper, cinnamon (bark or leaf), cypress, juniper, lemon, cedarwood, sage, thyme, rosemary.
