PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS)/MENSTRUAL CRAMPS
Many women suffer with monthly PMS which has progressively transformed into a chronic condition. It may cause emotional, as well as mental and physical imbalances, with related symptoms. As people vary, symptoms will differ, but the following may be common for many: mood swings, headaches or migraines, back pain, swelling of hands and feet (edema), breast tenderness, painful periods, weight gain, etc. Unfortunately, antidepressants are often prescribed for sufferers of PMS.
Aromatherapy oils may assist greatly in contributing to the relief of many symptoms related to this condition. It is recommended to commence each treatment approximately 10 days before the next menstruation is due and to continue until relief has been experienced or until the end of the menstrual cycle.
The antispasmodic properties of the oils, together with a very gentle massage over the abdomen or lower back, will disperse pain by relaxing the uterine muscles which have gone into spasm or contraction. Anxiety, depression, and mood changes may be treated as the oils are soothing, calming, and antidepressant. Imbalances are corrected by restoring equilibrium.
Suggested essential oils: Chamomile (Roman), cypress, frankincense, geranium, neroli, rose, clove, birch, vetiver, palmarosa, turmeric, petitgrain, patchouli, clary sage, rose geranium.
